Tessa

* * *

Thursday night, the whole crew returned to Prescott for a weeklong break.

Montana invited Tessa over to her house for a real shower, some drinks, and some girl time. The idea of a full-sized shower sounded so luxurious that Tessa couldn't turn her down. By 8 p.m., Abby joined them. Decked out in sweatpants and t-shirts, the three of them settled on the couch, glasses of wine in hand. "Tessa,” Abby said. “You must fill me in on every single thing that happened between you and Cody while you were gone.”

Tessa shook her head, ready to object, and Abby held up a finger. "Don't even try to deny it. I can sense these things. You have the look of a woman well-loved."

"She hasn't been well-loved in a few nights.” Montana smirked. “She's been busy babysitting me."

"So I take it you're not a well-loved woman, Montana?"

"You're correct. And I'll tell you what. Seeing the way Cody kissed Tessa — right there in the stands — really got to me. I need to be well-loved.”

Abby’s gaze zeroed in on Tessa. "He kissed you in the stands?"

"And not just a tiny peck, either," Montana said. She took a big gulp of wine and added, “It was a toe-curler.”

"Well, I'll be,” Abby said.

"What's the big deal?" Tessa asked. Public displays of affection might be unusual, but they weren’t earth-shattering. Were they?

"Only that, from what I've seen of Cody, kissing any woman in public — especially at the rodeo where he's competing — is completely unheard of."

"She's right." Montana tipped some more wine into her glass. The bottle was nearly empty. She tapped it on the edge of the glass to get every last drop.

Abby laughed. "What about you and Sawyer? You’re sure tossing them back tonight. I take it that means things didn't go well?"

"Do they ever?" Montana went on to tell Abby about the arguments she and Sawyer had while they were on tour.

Instead of looking concerned, Abby looked amused. "I don't know why you two don't just get together and stay together. The only reason you fight is because you’re both upset that you’re apart.”

"I think I've talked the subject to death, back to life, and then back to death again," Montana said. "Why don't you tell us what happened with the permits while we were gone?”

Abby said she was happy with the progress on her development. The architects were working on the plans now, and the builders could break ground in as soon as a month. “And then I’ll be building houses for the Mint Creek Ranch’s neighbors.”

“Trace isn't going to like that." Montana said. "I wish he would just take a look at what you're planning. I think he’d see it's not that much different from the way the Mint Creek Ranch is set up.”

For the first time that evening, Abby’s smile faltered. "I know. It's going to be amazing. I wish I could live there myself. But I could never be neighbors with Trace Nelson. He’d probably try to kill me.
